Student Work from Black Magic Workshop

The St. Louis Calligraphy Guild had me in to teach Black Magic over the weekend. The workshop is about using color on black paper for lettering. Everyone worked really hard, and there were lots of oohs and aahs as they saw how amazing these colors look on black paper. Here are some samples of what they created.

We started by mixing 12 shades of gouache and then testing samples on different kinds of black paper.  We used Fabriano Ingres, Bugra black and Arches cover black.

Then we moved on to testing Pearl-ex pigments and Twinkling H2Os:

Here is one table covered with samples of lettering done by the class on the second day:

These two were done by a left-handed calligrapher using a parallel pen:

I just viewed your Africa book. Wow is that incredible! I love all the colors, prints and journaling you put into it. What an inspiration. I love to travel and have something to inspire to. Im doing an Alaska journal now.

Trish,
Just to clarify, the Africa book was made by Lynn Slevinsky from Calgary, Canada. And, yes, it is beautiful and amazing to see all the detail she put into it!
Thanks for commenting!

Oh Roann...gorgeous results! And what a great excercise! Having references to how different paints and inks react on different surfaces is so important. I be everyone had a ball.
I must do more work on black!

Love and brightest blessings,

Your talent is amazing. Thank you for not hiding it. I stood before your piece in the Newberry and memorized parts of it - not just the words but the composition. And then when it was so beautifully hung at conference, I again stood in that marvelous space and took soul pictures of it. Thank you Roann. In your art you give much.
